The Caribbean cuisine is still very traditional. Most recipes are passed on from generation to generation. This is where chef Helmi Smeulders makes a change. With other chefs focusing on traditional recipes, Helmi finds different ways to use Caribbean ingredients and create new and exciting dishes. During her hands-on cooking class, you will learn all about it.
Helmi will show you all kinds of Caribbean fruits and vegetables. On the spot they get prepared, so you can taste them as well. Learn tips and tricks about using these ingredients. Like the easiest way to peal a mango or open a fresh coconut. You'll also learn how to fillet fish.
Then is it time to pick up the pots and pans and prepare the lunch menu; in groups of 2 you will prepare several dishes and sides. Helmi and her assistant are always available to help you.
When all the cooking is done, we will sit together at a nicely set table outside and enjoy a delicious home-cooked Caribbean lunch. During lunch wine is included.
Coffee and/or Tea
We end the class with a delicious homecooked lunch with various Caribbean dishes that we prepared during class.

We learned so much about island flavors and local cuisine. Had expert guidance and we always treated with dignity and respect. We also enjoyed the fruits of our labor with a phenomenal class luncheon that we prepared. We loved every minute!

Great class and chef. We made a lot of locally sourced dishes. There were 15 people from various countries in the class. Highly recommended. I booked several months in advance.
This is something I wanted to do a long time.. taking a Caribbean cooking class! We always do those classes in Azië but never closer to home.

A Curacao 'must do' for food lovers
We've spent a super fun morning with Helmi, a caribbean chef with lots of knowlegde on the local products. She welcomed us with coffee and got to know us before we started the class. She started her class by taking us on a journey through the caribbean kitchen, she talked about the local products with passion and loved to share her insights. In the beautiful studio we got to cook several caribbean inspired dishes which she has added her modern twist to. Afterwards we had a sit-down lunch outside and enjoyed the food we just cooked up. It is such an amicable and relaxed environment, we felt as if we were at home. I ended up buying her new cookbook, which also has beautiful pictures of the island and will be of great use when I'm back home.
